British Bulldog – Denver Soccer Pub

On a Sunday in Denver when the weather was being particularly ‘British’ with a light rain and overcast skies, I hopped on my bike and made my way over to a soccer pub called the British Bulldog. The reason for the occasion was the final of the Gold Cup Tournament in which the US would play Mexico. While I am a huge soccer fan, in general I have found that the majority of countrymen prefer to watch football, baseball or basketball rather than the world’s most popular sport. However, on this rainy Sunday I was pleasantly surprised with the incredible turnout at this local watering hole.

The British Bulldog was absolutely packed and had to be pushing max capacity when I arrived. Squeezing through the hordes of US Soccer fans decked head to toe in USA gear, I finally worked my way up to the bar for some much needed social lubrication. As pints and soccer go together like peanut butter and jelly, I was quite excited for the match to begin. As our head coach was suspended for the match and we started out very slow I was a bit nervous for the outcome of the match. However, the atmosphere in the bar was absolutely electric throughout the match and when we finally squeaked through a quite unglamorous goal everybody went crazy.

Having been on the streets of Madrid when Spain won the 2010 World Cup, I’ve seen some of the greatest soccer celebrations that can exist on this fine planet. While this was nowhere near as great of an atmosphere as some pubs I’ve been to in Europe, I was pleasantly surprised with the number of true US Soccer fans that exist in my hometown. While most of my friends across the pond don’t take US Soccer very seriously and think our league is a joke, I challenge you to watch the recent progress of our national team. Americans across the nation are slowly coming together in support for an up and coming squad with enormous potential. While we aren’t quite there yet, I’m excited to see our potential leading up to the World Cup in Brazil next year. Below you will find a clip of the atmosphere in the British Bulldog after the goal….
