Crawford State Park

Crawford State Park is located only 12 miles from the famous and spectacular north rim of the scenic Black Canyon of National Park. The state Park is surrounded by cattle ranches and distance views of Needle Rock, Castle Rock and Saddle Mountain.

The Park is conveniently located just one mile for the small ranching community of Crawford. You can find gas groceries and eateries here. There is a convenience store on the hill top just before you enter town.

The Lake and Distance Mountains

At only 6600 feet elevation, the park is noted for climate, summer and winter. There are 337 acres surrounding a 400 acres reservoir which was built in 1963.

In addition to the state park, you have the opportunity to view the massive Black Canyon from the north side. The north side of the canyon is secret gem of the national park. Few visitors see it, although it is the most magnificent view of the canyon.

Although there are 13 camp sites in the national park, Crawford State Park is most convenient and it is a better chose for just overnight campsite.

The Camper Services Building

There are two beautiful campgrounds here, Iron Creek and Clear Fork. The sites are for tents, trailers and campers on a first come first serve basis. Each campground has shower. Iron Creek is larger and it has Water and electricity hook ups. Clear Fork, on the other hand, does not. Iron Creek has a dump Station.

Crawford is well known has a quality rainbow trout, perch and crappie fishing hole. Occasional you can catch some largemouth bass, catfish and northern pike.

Wildlife is abundant around Crawford Sate Park. Beavers, chipmunks, skunks, mule deer live in and around the lake. It is fun to watch them come down to the water in the evening. The lake also attracts a variety of waterfowl, from Canadian geese to mallards and western grebes.

Crawford Reservoir is not a popular place for hiking. It has just a few short trails. The north rim of the Black Canyon of The Gunnison National Park has some of the most beautiful hikes.
